Johann David Wyss (March 4, 1743 - January 11, 1818) was a Swiss pastor who earned lasting fame for writing The Swiss Family Robinson, a novel inspired by Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. While Crusoe was a lone castaway, The Swiss Family Robinson was written to have a father figure impart wisdom to his children, teaching them important lessons. The Swiss Family Robinson involves a family being shipwrecked, allowing the father to teach his four sons about Christian values and morality, including naturalism and self-reliance. The influence of Enlightenment thinkers like Rousseau is evident in the writings of the Swiss pastor. The family encounters several adventures, with each one teaching the children certain lessons. Today the novel is considered a classic of Western literature.

Wyss' attitude toward education is in line with the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many of the episodes have to do with Christian-oriented moral lessons such as frugality, husbandry, acceptance, cooperation, etc. The adventures are presented as a series of lessons in natural history and the physical sciences, and resemble other, similar educational books for children in this period, such as Charlotte Turner Smith's Rural Walks: in Dialogues intended for the use of Young Persons (1795), Rambles Further: A continuation of Rural Walks (1796), A Natural History of Birds, intended chiefly for young persons (1807). But the novel differs in that it is modeled on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, a genuine adventure story,[1] and presents a geographically impossible array of large mammals (including tigers, brown bears, leopards, jackals, hyenas, cheetahs, wolves, moose, lions, rhinos, hippos, walruses, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, zebras, and onagers). and plants (including the bamboos, cassavas, cinnamon trees, coconut palm trees, fir trees, flax, Myrica cerifera, rice, rubber plant potatoes, sago palms, and an entirely fictitious kind of sugarcane) that probably could never have existed together on a single island for the children's education, nourishment, clothing and convenience.
  • The Swiss Family Robinson: Or Adventures of a Father and Mother and Four Sons in a Desert Island

    Johann David Wyss

Paperback (Forgotten Books, May 18, 2017)
Excerpt from The Swiss Family Robinson: Or Adventures of a Father and Mother and Four Sons in a Desert IslandA pastor or Clergyman of West Switzerland, having lost his fortune in the Revolution of 1798, resolved, on reflecting on the family he had to bring up, to become a voluntary exile, and to seek in other climates the means of support. He sailed, accordingly, with his wife and children, four sons, from twelve to five years of age, for England, where he accepted an appoint ment of Missionary to Otaheite not that he had any desire to take up his abode in that. Island, but that he had conceived the plan of passing from thence to Port Jackson, and domiciliating himself there as a free settler. He possessed a considerable knowledge of agriculture, and by this means hoped, with the aid of his sons, to gain an advantageous establishment, which his own country, convulsed with the horrors of war, denied him. He turned the small remnant of his fortune into money, and bought with it seeds of various sorts, and a few cattle, as farming stock. The family took their passage accordingly, satisfied with this consolation - that they should still remain together; and they sailed with favorable winds till in sight of New Guinea. Here they were attacked by a destructive and unrelenting tempest and it is in this crisis of their Adventures that the Swiss Pastor, or Family Robinson, begins the Journal which is now presented to the Public.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
